Dental Anxiety: a common fear
Despite all of the advances in dentistry
over recent years, a visit to the dentist can still provoke
anxiety and fear. Surveys show that more than 58% of
the general population fear a visit to the dentist and as
many as 16% of adults simply don't look after their teeth
because of dental anxiety.
How does hypnosis
help?
Hypnosis has been used by dentists and
generally to treat dental anxiety for more than 150 years.
Hypnosis techniques are also routinely used as anesthesia
during dental and surgical procedures when a patient cannot
tolerate anesthetic.
Anxiety Free
- Dental
will deal with dental phobia on 3 levels:
-
Firstly, CD 1 will reduce anxiety of
dental visits in a general way. You will begin to feel
less anxious and more in control in many ways but
particularly with regard to undergoing any dental
procedure.
-
Secondly, CD 2 will teach you a
self-hypnosis procedure that you will practice. Within a
sort time this will become second nature and you will
use it whenever you need to visit the dentist.
Your dentist will want you to be calm during your visit
as this is more comfortable for you and it makes his job
easier. It is a good idea to speak to your dentist
beforehand and let them know that you will need a little
time to do your self-hypnosis exercise. Some dentists
specialise in working with patients who suffer dental
anxiety and may well have experience of hypnosis.
-
Thirdly, CD 2 contains and additional
track with your self-hypnosis exercise and 30 minutes of
music. You can download this to an iPod or MP3 player to
use at the dental visit if you feel you need to.
