Understanding panic attacks
Most sufferers of panic attacks fear that
they are going mad or that they are losing control of their thought
and emotions, in fact nothing is further from the truth. Symptoms
can vary but sufferers usually experience some or all of the
following:
- Palpitations or a pounding heartbeat
- Sweaty palms
- A tightness in the chest
- Dizziness
- Difficulty breathing
- "Spinning thoughts"
- Dissociation from their surroundings
- Fear of losing control or doing
something out of character
- Trembling
- Crying without reason
A panic attack usually last a few minutes
and is extremely distressing for the sufferer as they fell out of
control. Panic attacks can also induce phobias such as agoraphobia
as a sufferer may avoid going to the place where the panic attack
happened for fear it may recur. Panic attacks tend to continue for
years unless untreated and severely limit the lives of sufferers.
What is a panic attack?
It is generally recognised that there are three types of panic
attacks:
- Spontaneous panic attacks: this attack
comes without any warning, and it unrelated to where the
sufferer may be or what they are doing at the time
- Specific panic attacks: these occur in
specifically feared places or situations and can also be related
to the revisiting of places where trauma occurred in the past
- Predisposed panic attacks: people
suffering panic disorder may experience this type of attack.
Some people with Panic Disorder can be predisposed to having
panic attacks in certain situations or places, although they are
not frightened of the situation or place.
What our clients say about these programs :
"Hypnotherapy has made a real difference to my life in that
previously I existed and now I know that I'm alive. I look forward to each
day and live for the moment rather than worrying about all the "yesterdays
and tomorrows". Each day I discover something new in that I have more
time to enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer.
My health has improved and I now sleep soundly, something I
haven't done since I was a small child. My infectious condition of feeling
good has been passed on to others as I just want to share what I have discovered
through you. Thank you for making my life
liveable and an exciting new
adventure". - Anne
